Elon Kohlberg, Ph.D.

Founder and Inventor, Digi-Block

Dr. Elon Kohlberg is the Royal Little Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been a professor at Harvard University since 1973. He has written many research papers in game theory and probability, and is well-regarded for his exceptional teaching methods. Professor Kohlberg invented the Digi-Block Program and founded Digi-Block, Inc. to develop teaching materials and methodology that present math to children in a simple and profound way. Currently Digi-Block is used to teach pre-K through 4th grade math in more than 10,000 classrooms in the U.S.





Our Instructors


Serena Chang, Instructor

Serena is studying Child Development at Tufts University, where she is currently pursuing her Massachusetts Early Childhood Teacher License for PreK-2nd grade. Serena has extensive experience working with young children and youth, from teaching in several preschool classrooms and serving as a counselor in a high school youth group. She is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Serena brings to Kohlberg Math a passion for inclusive education, and a love of mathematics and the visual and performing arts.




Sonya Connelly, Instructor

Sonya comes to Kohlberg Math with 10 years of combined teaching experience in Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 classrooms in Newton, MA and Allendale, NJ. She graduated from Wheelock College with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a concentration in Early Childhood Education and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in Family Studies. Sonya and her husband, Dennis, have two children, Ella, 4, and Aidan, 2 1/2.



Mary Liu, Instructor

Mary graduated from Harvard College with a degree in biology and her Massachusetts teacher certification. Driven by a passion for education, Mary loves to encourage the curiosity of young children and she sees teaching as her chance to have a positive impact on the future. Mary started programs in several elementary schools to help young students develop conflict resolution skills. For these efforts, she received an Achievement Award from the Education Council for Safe and Drug-Free School Consortium. She also won a Pforzheimer Fellowship, for her commitment to public service, which will go towards pursuing graduate studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the fall.


Emily Orlins, Instructor

Emily is pursuing her undergraduate degree in psychology at Harvard. She comes to Kohlberg Math with a passion for working with children. During the past two years, Emily has been Assistant Director and a mentor for Strong Women, Strong Girls, a mentoring program for girls between third and fifth grade. She leads first-year outdoor trips at Harvard, and has spent the past two summers leading outdoor trips for kids ages 10-14. Emily also served as math assistant at Sidwell Friends School in D.C., and as a volunteer math tutor for K-6 students. At Harvard, Emily looks forward to continuing to study developmental psychology, helping to mentor young students, and leading outdoor trips across the northeast.
